<image:caption>Presenting Snow2School at GASCA in Munich 10/10/2023 This July, Sophie Elixhauser (senior researcher, Snow2School) gave a presentation at the conference of the German Association of Social and Cultural Anthropology (GASCA) in Munich. In a workshop about “Social and Cultural Anthropology as “Citizen Science: Potential and limits” (Workshop 42), she introduced the Snow2School project and reflected on its Citizen Science (CS) approach. The talk was entitled “The Snow2School project in Greenland and Austria: reflections about interdisciplinary ‘Citizen Science’”. After some background to the project, she spoke about some methodological challenges of CS, its definition which appears rather vague in an anthropological context, CS and co-creation of knowledge, and about its democratic/participatory qualities. It was a great workshop with various other interesting presentations. Theresa Gusenleitner, PhD student in Snow2Rain, was also part of the audience and participated actively.</image:caption>

<image:title>Science - This figure shows how global (orange), Arctic (purple), and Greenland (green) temperatures have changed relative to the average for 1961-1990. The Arctic is experiencing a more dramatic warming compared to global temperatures (Shahi, 2024). Similarly, the Alps are warming quicker than the surrounding regions – an interesting analogy between Uummannaq and Eisenerz.</image:title>

<image:title>Greenland - The settlement of Illorsuit (“the many big houses”) is located approximately 100 km from Uummannaq. In Summer 2017, a landslide caused a tsunami hitting the area and it was decided to move the inhabitants of the settlements due to the danger of new landslides. Niaqornat (“the head shaped”) is located approximately 60 km west of Uummannaq. Since 1980, the number of inhabitants reduced drastically from 87 to 38. There are no roads but a small track connects the different official service houses of the settlement. All other daily transport is done by dog sled, snow mobiles or boat, and Niaqornat has a heliport with connections to Uummannaq and other settlements.</image:title>

<image:caption>This photo was taken during a period of unusually heavy snowfall that began on New Year's Day. So much snow fell that the only road leading to this area was closed on January 5, 2019, due to high avalanche risk, and it stayed closed for 16 days. The residents were completely cut off from the outside world. On January 6, after lunch, my grandmother opened a window to let some fresh air in. Through the heavy snowstorm and between two fir trees on her property, she spotted a large bird fluttering around. It turned out to be a storm petrel, which is not typically found in our area. The bird was trapped in the deep snow and couldn't free itself. Firefighters who were called carefully approached the bird, wearing snowshoes. They managed to rescue it and took it to a nearby cabin. After consulting with a bird expert, they provided the storm petrel with food and water. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, the bird did not survive and passed away four days later.</image:caption>

<image:title>BORG Eisenerz - This photo by Erich Niederhofer shows the Erzberg in winter around 1970. The Erzberg, the largest active open-pit mine in Central Europe, has been a symbol of mining in Eisenerz and the surrounding region for centuries. While mining used to be the economic foundation of the town, its significance has changed over time. Today, tourism plays a central role alongside mining. Nevertheless, Eisenerz is facing the challenges of structural change and population decline, which require new long-term economic strategies.</image:title>

<image:title>BORG Eisenerz - The image from 1969, contributed by Hugo Ganser, shows a group of people playing ice stock sport (similar to curling) on the lake Leopoldsteinersee, which was very popular in the past. It is particularly noteworthy that this is a mixed group of men and women, which was rather uncommon. Today, the lake rarely freezes over enough for this sport to be practiced here.</image:title>
